According to the EPA, data centers across the nation doubled their demand on the national power grid, consuming 61 billion kilowatt hours. That’s 1.5% of all the energy used in the US, a number that could be reduced by improving data center sustainability. Given the dynamic changes in energy costs that occur throughout the year, fluctuations in data center energy consumption can take a huge toll on Government, Corporate, and Academic IT operational budgets.
Across the board, IT executives are looking at innovative new ways to cut operational costs with "green" initiatives aimed at reducing energy use. The problem, according to reports coming from Gartner, InformationWeek, and others, is that many CTOs and CIOs begin their green initiatives with the goal of reducing energy costs, but without a strong plan for realizing that goal.
